Sticks’n’Sushi Victoria

Every time we eat out now I sort of think, how much longer will this last? Will we have to give up once Max is walking? Then he smashes a piece of sushi into his gob and we carry on.

Sticks’n’sushi is a small chain of Japanese and Danish fusion restaurants renowned for their child friendliness and on the third day the restaurant in Victoria was opened we toddled along to see for ourselves. There were plenty of other parents and small people there and a six year old at another table was overheard to pronounce that HE LOVED SUSHI. Cute.

The atmosphere at this branch is mellow, the lighting soft but if I’m honest the music playing wouldn’t have been out of place in an elevator and it wasn’t very loud so I felt a bit self conscious each time Max squawked. The sushi is quite good. It’s also quite expensive and service was a little haphazard but that’s probably down to the new opening. The most interesting thing to me about Sticks is the menu.

The menu is all photographs. I read people on twitter sneering about amateur food photographers and how it is changing the restaurant landscape almost daily and at some we’ll known chains there is now a camera icon listed next to their most photogenic dishes. There’s people all over the internet flailing their arms and gnashing their teeth about the possibility that photographs might return to menus and how distasteful that is. To my mind, photographs in menus isn’t a problem but if you show me a catalog of your meals and then what is served doesn’t resemble the photographs in the catalogue then it can only lead to disappointment.

Overall, Sticks feels quite high end and the prices match that feeling but the sushi itself falls a little short. The place is so child friendly though, that you might not care.

What’s good? The beef tataki, The ebi panko and the hotate kataife.

Kid friendly? Yes but you’d not know it if it wasn’t for word of mouth
