Macellaio RC Clapham

From the outside you’d be forgiven for thinking you couldn’t get into Macellaio with a buggy. If you have a large buggy you might not fit through the door, however, once you squeeze in through the narrow entrance you find not only a moody, sexy, dramatically lit Italian steakhouse, you’ll also probably see another few families eating there, as we did when we visited.

The staff were super keen to play with Max. He’s been teething and shouty and he’d just had his hair cut for the first time and one of the team literally took him out of my hands and walked up and down the restaurant to his utter delight. Then she gave him a digger to play with. (We’d brought toys too but the digger was a clear favourite.)

They’ve got 2 highchairs so ideally give them advance warning if you’re coming with a small. They can fit about 4 buggies in altogether. The food is meat and offal heavy as expected but with some additional dramatic flair. A hanger steak ‘with smoke’ comes to the table covered by a cloche, removed with a flourish.

What’s good? The staff are wonderful. The steaks are too.

Kid friendly? Unexpectedly so.
